In June 2026, during Head Start WEST’s First 1,000 Days! Early Head Start Conference, we asked attendees to share a sixty second Head Start story.

“When I started my journey with Head Start, my twins were three years old. At the time, I worked in fast food, but to find a reliable caretaker was a huge barrier that was holding me back. I remember the struggle of having to change my availability for work all the time, but once I discovered Head Start… It was a life changer, literally, because I didn’t have to worry about my schedule or if they are safe, and I knew they had teachers who took care and loved them as their own. Now, thanks to them, my children are thriving into second grade.
I joined the apprenticeship program where I got to actually work at the same exact Head Start Center where my kids attended. I got a scholarship from Head Start WEST, and although I still have a long journey to go. Head Start has truly impacted my twins and I more than anyone will ever know.
And that’s my story. Thank you.”
I have been to management workshops, not leadership training. This has totally changed my perspective and encouraged me to propel forward in developing my skills.
I am honored and humbled to be a recipient of the Head Start WEST’s Legacy Scholarship. The scholarship helped me get one step closer to achieving my goal of becoming a Head Start Director.
I took part in The disproportionate impact of COVID 19, and how to provide “real” support for black/brown children and families and I just want to say this was an amazing webinar. I hope we can look forward to further conversation on this topic.
