Nominated By: School Readiness Education Team Child Family Services Stanislaus County Office of Education
I am honored to nominate Maria as a STEAM Hero for her outstanding dedication to inspiring curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. Through innovative teaching practices and hands-on learning experiences, she brings science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics to life in meaningful ways. Her passion for STEAM empowers learners to explore, problem-solve, and think beyond limits. Her commitment, creativity, and impact truly embody the spirit of a STEAM hero.
Maria Teresa Ruiz is an exemplary leader and innovator in early childhood STEAM education and is highly deserving of recognition as a STEAM Hero for the West Office of Head Start. With a Master’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies & Child Development and a STEM Educator Certification, she brings deep expertise and research-based practices to our organization. She currently leads our organization’s STEAM initiatives, collaborating with the Stanislaus County Office of Education to intentionally integrate STEAM practices into early learning classrooms. Through this partnership, she has expanded access to high-quality, developmentally appropriate STEAM experiences for young children across our programs. Maria Teresa, along with our Scool Readiness Team, is leading a dynamic coaching cohort that supports over 50 coaches and education coordinators. This cohort provides a structured series of professional learning sessions focused on identifying effective STEAM practices and equipping coaches to bring those strategies directly to the teachers and classrooms they support. Her leadership ensures that STEAM is not an isolated initiative, but a sustainable, system-wide practice embedded in curriculum, coaching, and school readiness efforts. Her vision, expertise, and commitment to building educator capacity continue to positively impact staff, children, and families, making her an outstanding nominee for STEAM Hero recognition.

I have been to management workshops, not leadership training. This has totally changed my perspective and encouraged me to propel forward in developing my skills.
I am honored and humbled to be a recipient of the Head Start WEST’s Legacy Scholarship. The scholarship helped me get one step closer to achieving my goal of becoming a Head Start Director.
I took part in The disproportionate impact of COVID 19, and how to provide “real” support for black/brown children and families and I just want to say this was an amazing webinar. I hope we can look forward to further conversation on this topic.
Thank you so much for making events like this! I really enjoyed and learned so much teaching strategies to implement STEM in the classroom.
The HR Network was an excellent opportunity to network and learn the best practices from other HR professionals within Head Start programs. You will be amazed by the level of talent and experience of the participants.
The Summer Camp training was powerful and inspiring! Each presenter was very engaging, it’s hard to even pick a favorite session!
The Leadership Challenge training was very relevant to my work as a Head Start leader! Great facilitation; stayed with the program yet allowed time for individual and small group reflections.
