In June 2026, during Head Start WEST’s First 1,000 Days! Early Head Start Conference, we asked attendees to share a sixty second Head Start story.
This is Veronica Munoz from Kings Community Action Organization
“Hi, good afternoon. My name is Veonica Muñoz from King’s Community Action Organization. I’m the family child care specialist at this moment, but I want to share my story.
So my story with Head Start make a meaningful impact on me because I started as a single mom coming from L.A., moving to a different area. So then a home educator came and knocked on my door asking me to apply for the Head Start program.
So my child was enrolled in early Head Start. So after early Head Start, I was involved in the policy council. And then I became a chairperson. After that, they motivated me as a parent to go to school. So I got my AA degree. Then eventually got my bachelor’s degree in child development.
I had an opportunity to apply for the agency that I work for right now. They gave me opportunities, so I got the position as a teacher. Six months after, I got promoted as a family child care specialist. And then after 10, 11 years, I was promoted, or I was able to apply for the family child care coordinator where I’m working, where is my current position right now.
So I’ve been going through. my almost 26 years working for this agency. And then Head Start gave me a really, really impact in my life because I started as a migrant family, as a single mom. Gave me an opportunity for me to go to school. They guide me. They gave me a chance to be participating in the policy council. And then from there, I’ve been going step by step until… I got the position that I am now.
Now my child has been growing through via Head Start Child. She also got a psychology degree. She’s working for the same agency. And then now she is working in the innovation and prevention for social services.
So it is a wonderful, wonderful program that makes great opportunities for… for families that are looking for a better job and for better opportunities to provide for their kids.
Thank you.”

I have been to management workshops, not leadership training. This has totally changed my perspective and encouraged me to propel forward in developing my skills.
I am honored and humbled to be a recipient of the Head Start WEST’s Legacy Scholarship. The scholarship helped me get one step closer to achieving my goal of becoming a Head Start Director.
I took part in The disproportionate impact of COVID 19, and how to provide “real” support for black/brown children and families and I just want to say this was an amazing webinar. I hope we can look forward to further conversation on this topic.
Thank you so much for making events like this! I really enjoyed and learned so much teaching strategies to implement STEM in the classroom.
The HR Network was an excellent opportunity to network and learn the best practices from other HR professionals within Head Start programs. You will be amazed by the level of talent and experience of the participants.
The Summer Camp training was powerful and inspiring! Each presenter was very engaging, it’s hard to even pick a favorite session!
The Leadership Challenge training was very relevant to my work as a Head Start leader! Great facilitation; stayed with the program yet allowed time for individual and small group reflections.
