2026 Early Childhood STEM Hero Contest

Head Start WEST launched Early Childhood STEM Week to celebrate, elevate, and advocate for STEM learning in early childhood. While we’ve long understood the critical role STEM plays in child development, this inaugural year showed just how powerfully our community would come together around a shared commitment to young learners.

Participation spanned across Head Start WEST member agencies, reached into neighboring regions, and extended as far as the East Coast—demonstrating a clear and collective truth: where there is STEM, the Head Start community shows up.

At the heart of EC STEM Week is a commitment to uplifting the individuals who make this work possible. Through the EC STEM Hero contest, we had the privilege of recognizing twenty outstanding nominees—each representing the passion, creativity, and dedication that define early childhood STEM.

From this inspiring group, one individual was selected by community vote to be named the 2026 EC STEM Superhero: Ashley Ruiz, a Capo Valley Head Start teacher with Orange County Head Start.

Ashley’s work reflects the very best of what early childhood STEM can be—engaging, accessible, and rooted in joy and discovery for young learners. We celebrate Ashley alongside every educator, leader, and advocate who continues to bring STEM to life for children every day. You can read more about her journey and learn about the other 2026 nominees below.

As we look ahead, EC STEM Week will take place annually during the second week of March. We invite you to continue exploring, celebrating, and uplifting the STEM heroes in your own community.

  • What inspired you to work in Head Start, and what keeps you passionate about it today?
    • I was inspired to work at Head Start because I wanted to support children and families early on. What keeps me passionate today is seeing children discover their strengths and experience those breakthrough moments- big and small- that remind me why this work matters.
  • Why is STEM important in early childhood, from your perspective?
    • STEM feels important to me because I’ve seen how it opens up a whole new world for children. STEM is important in early childhood because it helps children learn to explore, ask questions, and solve problems. It builds the foundation for critical thinking, creativity, and confidence that they’ll use in every part of their learning.
  • Can you share a moment or example where you’ve seen STEM come to life in your classroom or program?
    • One meaningful STEM moment for me was watching the children care for their plants during our plant life cycle activity. We started by germinating the seeds inside plastic zip bags. Each child chose a seed, held it gently in their hands, and whispered kind words to it before folding it inside a warm, damp paper towel. Every day for an entire week, they rushed to the window to check on their seeds and observe any tiny changes. On day four, we spotted our very first pea root, and the excitement spread across the whole classroom. The children began speaking even more encouragement to their seeds like “grow,” and “I will take care of you.” Once many of the seeds had sprouted, we headed out to the garden, and with their tiny hands, the children planted their seedlings with so much pride. Watching their care, patience, and joy turn into real growth was such a powerful reminder of how meaningful hands‑on science can be for young children.
  • What do you wish more people understood about the role of STEM in early learning?
    • I wish more people understood that STEM in early childhood isn’t about teaching the perfect lessons, it’s about giving children the chance to explore, wonder, and believe in themselves. Children are so curious, and STEM helps them ask questions, test ideas, and feel proud when they figure something out. The confidence build through STEM stays with them beyond the classroom.

    STEM Nominees

    Troy Osorno
    Radiologic Technologist Maui Medical Group

    Nominated by: Head Start WEST

Troy “the X-Ray Boy” was a featured panelist at The Head Start WEST 2025 Family Engagement Conference. His own journey in his own words:

“Head Start has helped my family so much throughout the years. My daughter, Leanne, attended the program at the Maui college location. This was the same place I completed my radiology prerequisites in 2007. As a young father trying to earn my degree, it was a struggle to pay the bills. Thankfully, Head Start helped make my dream a reality and I’ve been working as a radiologic technologist at the Maui Medical Group for 16 years now!

In my free time, I like to give back by visiting Head Start locations to teach kids about x-ray, ultrasound, CT & MRI. I was recognized as MEO’s 2017-2018 Volunteer of the Year, which inspired me to present at an even bigger scale. I’ve gone on to do my radiology presentation at schools throughout the world, helping kids to learn about diagnostic imaging. Leanne is doing her part as well! She’s studying nursing at UH Manoa and is currently completing her clinical hours at Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women & Children. ”

Each experience is intentionally connected to curriculum goals, assessment documentation strategies, and quality interaction indicators. Teachers leave sessions with ready-to-use materials, questioning strategies, and documentation ideas that strengthen both practice and child outcomes.

    Measurable and Sustainable Impact

Through this initiative, the School Readiness Team has:

Increased educator confidence in facilitating STEAM

    Strengthened intentional instructional interactions

Enhanced alignment between curriculum and assessment
