Melissa serves as Head Start WEST’s Program Manager – Training & Events, where she leads the planning and coordination of learning opportunities, events, and experiences that bring the Head Start community together.
A lifelong Sacramento resident, Melissa has built her career around community, education, and a commitment to social justice. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Sacramento State, where her studies focused on issues including Latinx politics, women in politics, LGBTQ+ politics, and education policy. That foundation continues to shape the way she approaches her work and her belief in the importance of creating spaces where people can learn, connect, and advocate for the communities they serve.
Melissa’s connection to Head Start WEST began as an intern, where she conducted research for the organization’s advocacy work and developed communication tools to support campaigns and events. That early experience gave her a strong understanding of HSW’s mission and values, which she now brings to her work supporting Head Start professionals across the West.
Before joining Head Start WEST, Melissa also served as a store manager for a large retailer, developing leadership, organization, and team-building skills that continue to serve her well in her work today.
At the heart of Melissa’s work is a passion for serving her community and supporting people whose voices and experiences deserve to be heard. She brings that commitment to every training, event, and connection she helps create, with the goal of making Head Start WEST a place where people can come together, learn from one another, and continue building a stronger future for children and families.

I have been to management workshops, not leadership training. This has totally changed my perspective and encouraged me to propel forward in developing my skills.
I am honored and humbled to be a recipient of the Head Start WEST’s Legacy Scholarship. The scholarship helped me get one step closer to achieving my goal of becoming a Head Start Director.
I took part in The disproportionate impact of COVID 19, and how to provide “real” support for black/brown children and families and I just want to say this was an amazing webinar. I hope we can look forward to further conversation on this topic.
Thank you so much for making events like this! I really enjoyed and learned so much teaching strategies to implement STEM in the classroom.
The HR Network was an excellent opportunity to network and learn the best practices from other HR professionals within Head Start programs. You will be amazed by the level of talent and experience of the participants.
The Summer Camp training was powerful and inspiring! Each presenter was very engaging, it’s hard to even pick a favorite session!
The Leadership Challenge training was very relevant to my work as a Head Start leader! Great facilitation; stayed with the program yet allowed time for individual and small group reflections.
